Have you ever thought about how we remember things better
when we sing
them? Over and over again? On one of my long drives to Northern
Illinois University, Antonio Carlos Jobim's, "The Waters of March"
came on the radio. For some unknown reason, I started writing words
that would help students write better essays.

The Writing Song
When I got home, I wrote them down, and did a simple arrangement of his song
on my synthesizer. I got my daughter do sing the lyrics, which
you can hear by pressing the link below. Play it for your kids and see if
it helps. I would love to her from you! JPMcDunn@aol.com
If you have trouble with the download, e-mail me - I will attach it and
forward it to you. I would put it on this site, but the wav file is 20
megs!
Words
The Teacher said
"Write an essay today"
There is one little hitch
You don’t know what to say
You’re thinking your thoughts
Even though it’s a pain
You are using your head
You are storming your brain
A thought, a spark
Now you’re starting to think
Get some paper, a desk
Get a pen full of ink
You find some facts
Do some research and check
Why the Yellow Giraffe
Has such a long neck
You don’t want to make
Any errors or gaps
So you outline your thoughts
And it acts like a map
Your first few lines
That you’re writing today
Should tell everyone
What you’re planning to say
|
The next few paragraphs
Flesh out your theme
You think you’ve become
A writing machine
You’re almost done
You’re no longer a pup
Now your last paragraph
Will sum it all up
You find that words
Are really your friend
Cause you’ve written an intro
A Body, an End
You are starting to see
That you’ve got what it takes
You’re checking your grammar
And fixing mistake
You’re proud of yourself
‘Cause you’ve really gone far
And your paper comes back
With a big yellow star
Remember these tips
And you’ll never go wrong
And we finally come
to the end of my song |
