Interests and Hobbies

People are always interested in what a potential employee does when they are not at work.  Perhaps, if they have no outside interests, there is a better likelihood that they will burn out.  I maintain that  "when you work full time, are married, have a family and go to school part-time (working on several degrees at the same time, in some cases) the concept of "spare time" doesn't hit the radar screen too often.

I do have a few hobbies which are illustrated below:

I am an avid golfer, which does not mean that I am a GOOD golfer-but I did pretty good on July 10, 2005!  The Schaumburg Golf Course sponsored a "Hole in One" contest.  To qualify, I had to put a golf ball within 4 feet of a 145 yard hole.  My 12th ball out of 16 was 2 feet, 11 inches from the flag.  In
the semi-finals, I had to put one of my 6 golf balls onto that same green.  In the finals, I put one of my two golf balls 29 feet, 7 inches (or 18" off the green) from the flag on a 185 yard hole.  I didn't win the million dollars (nor did anyone else), but I came in 9th (out of 36) and won 4 18-hole rounds of golf, about a $250 value.  Whether I can do any of that again is yet to be seen, but I did it that day!

The above picture  is the Chicago River at about LaSalle Street and that is me in a kayak - the King Kong part was some sort of machination that  I dreamed up in PhotoShop.  I have a Prijon Calabria Kayak and enjoy paddling it in the Fox River, the Chicago River and just about any place that has water deep enough to paddle in.

Another "Closest to the Pin" Contest

On November 5, The Addison Park District offered a "Closest to the Pin" Contest.

I came in First Place by putting a golf ball 4ft 2 inches from a hole 110 yards away.

My prize was:

  • $15.00 Gift Certificate at Jewel
  • $10. 00 Gift Certificate at Applebees
  • $20.00 Gift Certificate at Fiore Hair Salon
  • One Free hour at the Links and Tees Indoor Driving Range
  • One Dozen Golf Balls

If you are even faintly Irish, you have to be a Notre Dame Fan.  Some buddies and I went out to South Bend to see The Fighting Irish CRUSH BYU 49-23  (Go Irish!).

Cool New Web Site

While doing some Due Diligence about a school that I have an interview with, I came across a web site that allows the user to upload pictures and convert them into a show with transitions and music.  I used one of my favorite Superheroes as fodder for the presentation.
